The challenges associated with effective application of big data in healthcare is significant. The healthcare industry lags many of the other industries in adoption of advanced computational techniques and data sets are often kept in silos and not shared across researchers, organizations or decision makers. And while the technical challenges may be obvious, the political and collaborative barriers to implementing big data solutions are often undiscovered. Within Indiana, organizations and institutions have a history of coming together to help solve big problems. The Indiana Biosciences Research Institute (IBRI) is working to tackle health challenges related to cardio metabolic disease using resources and stimulating collaborations here in the state and beyond. This panel will explore these challenges and opportunities from multiple organizational viewpoints (industrial, institute, and academic), governance (security, privacy, and legal), and technical (data integration and analysis) and highlight the notable accomplishments that break down these barriers and drive collaborative innovation. These collaborations have already resulted in a scientific manuscript published in the special “Medicine in the Digital Age”
